We understand that every child is unique and needs to be treated with the same respect and care as our own children. Within the dental field it is not uncommon for people both young and old to have a high degree of anxiety over procedures and visits. As a result, we work hard to provide a gradual introduction to our office and our exploration of your child’s dental health. This slow introduction helps to ease fears and calm nerves of even the most uncertain child, and we are confident that it will work for you and yours.
Special Needs Children
Our knowledgeable and specialized staff understands the challenges of a growing mouth. Growing pains can sprout up at the most inopportune times and can impede the ability of a child to open their mouth fully. It can often be hard to reach certain places in the mouth to provide them with adequate care. Further, toothbrushes can often be too large to properly fit into a child sized mouth. Jaw growth can sometimes occur too quickly or not at the same pace as the development of the rest of the oral structures.
Children with sensory challenges can often find the texture or sensation of brushing, flossing, and even different varieties of toothpaste to be overwhelming. We are happy to work with you and your child to find the happy medium that will give them the key to great oral health. We have plenty of different options available to test out and find a solution that everyone is comfortable with. Even something as basic as flossing has a bevy of options available to make it easier to reach hard to reach areas, with different textures and flavors.
It is so important to develop those good hygiene habits early on, not only for the child’s current health but to ensure their continued oral health well into adulthood. One of the key factors in developing those habits is having a dental team that listens to and respects you and your child. Pediatric dentists are required to have a great deal of extra schooling to prepare them for everything from behavior management to sedation on small children.
Your child’s safety is always our top priority. We understand how hard it can be to convince a scared child to come into our office. As such, we are prepared to calm their fears as soon as they walk in the door. Further, we have a few different methods of sleep dentistry available if they are inconsolable. Because safety is our first concern we have a set of standards and practices in place to ensure that your child meets the basic criteria for such a procedure.
Please give us a call at (503) 644-4749 to discuss any special needs your child may have. Also, if at all possible try to avoid using verbiage like “shots” and “drill” in front of your child to avoid any unnecessary anxiety over their visit.
